The Best Way to Design eLearning Content

The importance of expertly designed e-learning content for effective digital learning cannot be overemphasized. Even with the different forms of technology and tools available for the sharing, creating, distribution, and measurement, effective learning development, and e-learning design still reigns supreme.

Standards created based on traditional standards and recent science on adult education guide the development of learning content. These foundational standards guide instructional designers and authors to create content for maximum retention and effective communication.

1) The ADDIE Framework

This framework is described as the most commonly applied for adult learning. Florida State originally designed the ADDIE framework for the US Army in 1975. The initial development was aimed at adapting traditional learning methods for an adult audience.

Components of the ADDIE framework are effected in a continuous cycle. These are the elements of the ADDIE framework:

2) Analysis

In this stage, the focus of the designers is the identification of the essential learning goals and limitations. The designers also identify project requirements and other features that will influence the project timeline.

3) Design

Based on the information and insights gathered in the analysis phase, the instructors find resources and subject matter experts in the design phase. This is also where the interactive elements, quizzes, and content are identified, also in line with the findings made in the analysis phase.

4) Development

The resources and elements identified in the design phase are applied to create the instructional material. Designers, writers, and programmers are the core professionals involved in this development phase.

After the instructional material is developed, it is tested on the preferred platforms. The testing of the created material usually ends the development phase.

5) Implementation

After the material has been created and tested, the implementation phase kicks in. This phase involves the users interacting with the content in the different learning settings. The users interact with the content for learning purposes, and measurements and assessments are carried out.

6) Evaluation

The evaluation of learner and content performance is carried out in this stage. The instructional stakeholders are involved in the review of the quality of the content and its performance. The content is evaluated against the goals initially created in the analysis phase.

After the evaluation, improvements are outlined and necessary adjustments are suggested.

Until the institutional stakeholders approve the final product, a loop of the components of the ADDIE framework ensues.

7) The Successive Approximate Model

The SAM can be described as combining the best practices of Agile software development and the ADDIE process.

This model is an improvement on the ADDIE process aimed at the creation of high-quality learning experiences. It particularly differs from the ADDIE process because evaluation is not left till after the product is developed.

With SAM, evaluation occurs during the development and design stages. That way, the final approved product is quicker than with the ADDIE process.

8) Goals of eLearning Design

Apart from ADDIE and SAM, other standards are available for the development of high-quality e-learning content. Irrespective of the standards applied, the goals of e-learning design are the same. Here are the general goals of e-learning design.

9) Inclusivity

Learning content should be designed to be inclusive, supporting various learners and allowing learners to go at their pace. Ensure that the courses are developed in line with the strengths of the learners.

10) Accessibility

The easy consumption of e-learning content should be a core accessibility goal. Learners should be able to access the course on the go. Complex ideas and subjects should be broken down into the simplest bits.

11) Engaging

Design e-learning content to be interesting and interactive. Content can be designed to be more engaging by leveraging humor and applying real-life scenarios.
